THE PERIALS OF PEDICURES

I send this to patients every year as the warm weather begins --- Hope this keeps you on your toes!!

Whirlpool footbaths used for pedicures may contain bacteria that can cause boils and skin ulcers that could lead to permanent scarring. In a study done in May 2002, researchers reported that more than 100 women at a California nail salon developed these problems after they softened their feet, ankles, and calves in a whirlpool that turned out to be a breeding ground for bacteria. Further study revealed that 70% of the women had shaved their legs before the appointment, apparently making it easier for the bacteria to enter the body through tiny openings in the skin.

The bacteria grew behind each waterjet, and these areas had not been cleaned. There were large amounts of hair and skin debris, and the warm water provided a perfect media for bacteria to grow.

Outbreaks often take a while to appear - lesions may not be obvious for anywhere from 10-128 days!
